
Recently, Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav announced the commencement of Yoga Mahotsav 2026 at Khajuraho (Madhya Pradesh), a 25-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga (IDY). The function will be organised by Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (New Delhi), MDNIY, Ministry of Ayush, on 21st June 2026, under the theme of ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’. The yoga was performed collectively by thousands of people, including yogis, students, eminent personalities, and health enthusiasts assembled at this holy place. The participants will follow the Common Yoga Protocol while celebrating the harmony between India’s ancient heritage and spiritual consciousness.

Yoga Mahotsav 2026: A 25-Day Countdown to Health and Wellness-
Yoga Mahotsav 2026 is the annual outreach program to be hosted at Khajuraho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, organised by the Ministry of Ayush ahead of the International Day of Yoga as part of the important 25-day preparatory period.
This event aims to achieve four major strategic objectives:
- Firstly, the Mahotsav is designed to spread awareness about yoga among all sections of the population on a global platform, ranging from children to elderly people.
- Second, community participation in the event can be facilitated through organising events at the level of panchayats and the involvement of yoga ambassadors within the communities.
- Thirdly, the main objective of this event is to promote the culture of fitness, wellness, and spiritual integration through yoga practices for life rather than as an occasional responsibility.
- Finally, the event is planned to connect various communities in over 100 places in India and more than 190 nations worldwide.
- In line with the strategy that seeks to make yoga a year-long movement within society, Yoga Mahotsav is conducted as part of India’s strategic vision of making yoga a year-long public health mission with programs like Yoga 365 and other outreach activities.

Khajuraho Hosts the Yoga Mahostsav: Tribute to Indian Heritage-
The renowned group of temples of Khajuraho monuments, famous around the globe for their exquisite architecture and an important UNESCO Heritage Site, will be chosen as the venue for the 25-day Yoga Mahotsav 2026 celebrations. As announced by the Cabinet Minister of India (Department of State for Health & Family Welfare), Shri Prataprao Jadhav stated that the Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho has been chosen as it is considered the epitome of India’s glorious heritage, culture, spirituality and harmony. Therefore, the location is appropriate to organise such an event as it has a calm ambience and positive energies suitable for yoga practises. According to the officials from the Ministry of Ayush, the program at Khajurahi is intended to stress the relationship between the traditional Indian customs and modern trends in health and spreading the message of yoga as a “unification of mind, soul and body”.
Start of the 25-Day Countdown to IDY 2026-
On 27th May 2026, the Yoga Mahotsav 2026 will signify the beginning of the 25-day countdown to International Day of Yoga 2026, which is an endeavour initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage people to practice Yoga all over the world and raise awareness about their health and mental well-being.
According to the statement issued by the Union Minister for Ayush and the independent in-charge, Shri Prataprao Jadhav ensured the Government of India is not leaving any stone unturned to ensure that International Day of Yoga 2026 becomes the biggest yoga event in the world.
Before the 25-day countdown at Khajuraho, the Ministry and government, along with state authorities, have done several countdowns to IDY 2026, including:
- 100-day countdown on March 13 2026, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi
- 75-day countdown in April 2026 at Lonar, Maharashtra
- 50-day countdown on May 2, 2026, at Kanha Shanti Varam in Hyderabad, Telangana

Yoga Sangam Portal-
The Cabinet Minister Prataprao J. has launched a digital portal, “ Yoga Sangam Portal”, to register for the event ahead of the International Day of Yoga organised at Kolkata, West Bengal. The portal designed and implemented by the Ministry of Ayush (GOI) is supposed to coordinate events and schedules to be held on 21st June 2026. The portal is accessible to communities, organisations, and institutions to register for the upcoming yoga events.

Dignitaries and Stakeholders Who Attended the Event-
Union minister along with several state ministers had attended the commencement ceremony of Yoga Mahotsav 2026, organised at Khajuraho, such as:
- Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Ayush, launched the event along with the IDY 2026 theme and also introduced important initiatives such as the Yoga Sangam Portal.
- Shri Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, in his virtual address, stressed the cultural importance of Khajuraho and its role in becoming an international yoga centre.
- Shri Inder Singh Parmar, Cabinet Minister from the Dept of Higher Education, Technical, and the Ministry of Ayush in the Govt of MP, represented the Government of MP’s role in ensuring yoga education facilities in MP.
- State Minister Shri Dharmendra Bhav Singh Lodhi, State for Culture, Dept. of Tourism and Religious Trust & Endowment, MP, emphasised the harmony between the heritage sites and yoga.
- Prof. (Dr.) Kashinath Samagandi, Director, MDNIY, performed the Common Yoga protocol and took charge of event execution from his organisation.
Theme and Focus of IDY 2026-
According to the announcement made the theme of International Day of Yoga 2026 will be “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, which seeks to motivate individuals across all age groups to practice yoga in order to maintain the fitness of both body and mind.
- Apart from overall well-being, the Ministry of Ayush is promoting yoga-based solutions not only for NCDs (non-communicable diseases) but also for stress, lifestyle disorders, and senior citizen care as well.
- At various past Yoga Mahotsav functions, many yoga protocols were launched by the Government, which were specific to certain health issues and ages. These include protocols of yoga for the heart, diabetes, lungs, and mind.
- One such organisation that will be playing a key role in organising Yoga Mahotsav 2026 and other related countdown activities is the MDNIY, which operates under the Ministry of Ayush. This organisation has already been carrying out campaigns across the nation to create awareness regarding yoga practices.
As part of preparations for IDY 2026, the ministry has introduced an initiative called the “100 Days, 100 Cities, 100 Organisations”. According to this initiative, various organisations from schools to colleges, government organisations, NGOs, and wellness organisations have joined together to promote yoga among citizens.
