India to Host 2024 World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly

The telecommunication industry is filled with excitement as India will host the World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (WTSA) from 15-24 October 2024. Union Minister of Communication and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw gave the information at the India Mobile Congress 2023. This will take place after the Global Standardisation Symposium (GSS) on 14 October 2024 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (WTSA) is an assembly of member states and other organisations (sector members) that participate in the standardisation sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) i.e. ITU-T. It is a quadrennial event which is held every four years. The organising body ITU is a specialised United Nations agency for information and communication technologies.

Importance of ‘WTSA’-

WTSA serves as a platform for countries to establish global telecommunications standards. WTSA-2024 presents a significant opportunity for India to lead in ITU-T, influencing global standards and benefiting telecom/ICT research and local industry.

Establishment of ITU Area Office and Innovation Centre-

The minister and Houlin Zhao, the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), have already signed the Host Country Agreement (HCA) on 3 March 2022. This agreement establishes an Area Office and Innovation Centre of ITU in New Delhi.
